S.Korea's newly-wed couples with children continue to fall in 2020

SEOUL, Dec。 9 (Xinhua) —— South Korea‘s newly-wed couples with children continued to fall last year amid a growing social trend of delaying marriage and having no baby, statistical office data showed Thursday。

The number of newly-wed couples, who got married in the period of five years up to Nov。 1, 2020, was 1,184,000, according to Statistics Korea, down 6。1 percent from a year earlier。

Among the first-time newly married couples that reached 938,000, 55。5 percent had children。

The percentage of newly-weds with babies continued to slide from 64。5 percent in 2015 to 62。5 percent in 2017 and 57。5 percent in 2019。

The average number of babies born to the newly-weds fell to 0。68 on Nov。 1 last year from 0。71 a year earlier。

The country has struggled with a chronically low birth rate, caused by the social trend of delaying or giving up on marriages and having no baby amid economic difficulties。

Newly-wed couples who had their own homes had an average 0。76 children, higher than 0。62 for newly-weds without a home。

An annual average income, earned by the newly married couples, amounted to 59。89 million won (51,000 U。S。 dollars) in 2020, up 4。9 percent from the previous year。

Among the first-time newly-weds, 52。0 percent was dual-income couples in October 2020, up 2。9 percentage points from a year earlier。 Enditem
